How Do I Choose The Right Cosmetic Dentist?

Choosing the right cosmetic dentist today is a very important decision.  It should not be taken lightly!  Many dentists label themselves to be a cosmetic dentist because they can offer simple cosmetic procedures such as tooth whitening and bonding.  They may perform only an occasional cosmetic procedure.  If you are looking at enhancing or recreating your smile, start by doing your research.

Check out the dentist’s website for their resume and background.  If web-access isn’t available, call their office and request this information by mail.  See how much continuing education they have taken in cosmetic dentistry and other related areas.  Almost as importantly, how much continuing education has the doctor’s team taken?  What are their accreditations and credentials?  Look at their work.  Most excellent cosmetic dentists will display numerous before and after photos of their work.  The more cases the dentist can show you the easier it will be for you to judge the quality of their work.  Good cosmetic dentists will do a cosmetic wax up or mock up of what he or she can make your teeth look like.  A good cosmetic dentist will also take numerous before and after photographs and be able to do a cosmetic imaging of your smile.  You may then view a photograph or photographs of what your new smile can look like.  Many good cosmetic dentists may even have their own portrait studio and/or photo gallery in their office.  Ask the dentist how many cases they have performed and how extensive these procedures were.  A good cosmetic dentist should be comfortable and knowledgeable about each case that they have completed.

Most cosmetic dentists belong to cosmetic dental organizations such as The International Association of Comprehensive Aesthetics and The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry.  Also of great importance, who is the laboratory or technician that is helping create your new smile?  He or she must be an artist.  They must take into account your complexion, hair color, eye color, lips, age, etc. when fabricating your new smile.  The dentist and technician must work closely together and be proud of their end result.  Excellent cosmetic dentistry is not inexpensive.  However, it should be a life enhancing experience.

Lastly, meet the dentist.  Set up a consultation to discuss your concerns and desires.  By effective communication between the dentist, yourself, and the technician, you should obtain results that you desire and deserve.  By going through this investigative process you will greatly enhance your ability to find a truly great cosmetic dentist.  Your initial time and investment will pay dividends for years to come.
